This spring, Guajiro Cuban Comfort Food, a Cuban food truck that opened in 2022, will expand with a new beverage concept in the River Arts District.

On May 2, El Patio by Guajiro, a beer and wine bar, is scheduled to open with indoor and outdoor seating for bar and food truck patrons. "By aligning the opening of El Patio with our extended hours at Guajiro, we aim to provide our guests with a seamless journey through Cuban cuisine and culture," Chris Barroso, owner of Guajiro Cuban Comfort Food, said in a news release. Finding authentic Cuban food can be tough, but Guajiro Cuban Comfort Food in the River Arts District is changing that. This family-run restaurant serves abuela’s home cooking and no-nonsense. Their menus boast everything from Cuban breakfast, croquetas, guava and cream cheese pastelitos, coladas, an assortment of sandwiches, and more. You’ll be walking out saying, “Guajira! New food truck Guajiro Cuban Comfort Food will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, March 18, noon-6 p.m. at its permanent location outside the Asheville Cotton Mill Studios in the River Arts District. The event will feature authentic Cuban cuisine, from the Cubano sandwich to Cuban pastries and coffee. The celebration will also include live music, dominoes games and cigars available for purchase. An after-party with house music and tribal drumming takes place at Great Wild Nowhere, located inside the Cotton Mill Studios, at 8 p.m.

The owner, Christian Barroso, is a second-generation Cuban American who grew up learning how to cook dishes with his grandmother. In Cuba, the word “guajiro” refers to a farmer, rural person or agricultural worker — a profession held by Barroso’s great-grandfather, who grew sugarcane in Cuba.
